Piers Clemett

I am a painter and printmaker living and working in Gloucestershire in the UK. I graduated from Central St. Martins in 1988. Paintings are done primarily in oil or watercolour. Observation and drawing are important to my practice and I work directly from life. I am drawn to the iconography of still life but also landscape and the figure.

Between 1992 and 1993 I, along with fellow assistant Karl Lydon, assisted the late artist, filmmaker and gay rights activist Derek Jarman create a series of large scale paintings documenting his outrage at the victimisation of the gay community by the tabloid press for the AIDS outbreak, and his response to the disease. In 1992 the paintings were exhibited in the show QUEER at the City Art Gallery, Manchester, and Karsten Schubert Gallery, London, and EVIL QUEEN, at the Whitworth Art Gallery, 1994.
